Can’t Stay Put: Uncovering the Footprints

(ATLANTA) In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, Lauren Miller, founder of the Can’t Stay Put movement, has announced that she will be embarking on a Civil Rights tour across the United States beginning October 2, 2013.   The mission of “Can’t Stay Put: Uncovering the Footprints” is to empower others through the stories of the plight of African-Americans and encourage others to learn more about their own history. The two-week trip, will begin and end in Atlanta.  She plans to travel as far south as St. Augustine, FL to visit the St. Augustine Freedom Trail and as northwest as Omaha, Nebraska to visit the birthplace of Malcolm X. Can’t Stay put is a movement to expose young adults to different countries, cultures and people. Can’t Stay Put aims to encourage young adults who may or may not have global traveling experiences to be travelers and not just tourists. “For my birthday, I wanted to focus on learning more about the rich history of the Civil Rights movement. There’s only so much you can learn from books. As a traveler, I’ve learned that it’s about the experiences,” explained Miller. “I was inspired by a James Baldwin quote that says, ‘Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.’“ Stops on the tour include: Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham, AL; Memphis, TN; Little Rock, AR; Topeka, KS;  St. Louis, MO; Kentucky; Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Greensboro, Durham, Fayetteville, NC; Charleston, Columbia, SC; Atlanta, GA.
